Knee replacement surgery in Dubai

A new joint surface for a knee worn out by arthritis.

Where in Dubai

Dr. Subhash sees knee patients at Grand Infinity Medical Center in Al Muteena, Deira. The first visit is a consultation: he examines the knee and reviews your X-rays. If an operation is planned, he tells you at that visit which hospital it will be in and what your insurance needs before the date is set.

What is knee replacement surgery?

In a knee replacement, the surgeon removes the damaged surfaces at the ends of the thigh bone and shin bone and covers them with metal and plastic parts. The new surfaces glide smoothly, so the joint stops grinding. A total knee replacement resurfaces the whole joint. A partial (unicompartmental) replacement resurfaces only the worn side, when the rest of the knee is healthy. Most knee replacements are done for osteoarthritis. Others follow rheumatoid arthritis, an old injury, or a deformity such as bow legs.

Who it can help

  • Knee pain that wakes you at night or stops you walking, climbing stairs or praying comfortably.
  • Pain that is still severe after painkillers, physiotherapy, weight loss and injections have been tried.
  • A knee that has become bowed, knock-kneed or stiff.
  • X-rays that show the joint space worn away.
  • An earlier knee replacement that has become loose, worn or painful (a revision operation).

How Dr. Subhash approaches it

Dr. Subhash trained in hip and knee replacement on a fellowship at Sunshine Hospitals in Secunderabad, India, in 2016, and finished top of his batch. He performs total and partial knee replacements, and revision surgery when an earlier replacement has failed. He starts with the least surgery that will work: many knees improve with physiotherapy, weight loss and injections, and surgery is offered when they have not. Before any operation he explains which type of replacement suits your knee and why.

What to expect

  1. Consultation

He examines the knee, asks how the pain limits your day and reviews your X-rays. He may ask for blood tests or a scan.

  2. Deciding together

If surgery makes sense, he explains total versus partial replacement, the risks and the recovery, and answers your questions. You decide.

  3. Preparing

Pre-operative tests check that you are fit for the anaesthetic. You learn the exercises you will do afterwards, and you plan help at home for the first weeks.

  4. The operation

The operation usually takes one to two hours under a spinal or general anaesthetic. Most patients stand with help on the same day or the next.

  5. In hospital

A typical stay is two to four days. Physiotherapists teach you to walk with a frame or crutches and to climb stairs safely.

  6. Follow-up

He checks the wound and your progress at planned visits, usually at about two weeks, six weeks and three months.

Recovery, in general terms

Every patient is different. These are typical milestones, not a promise; your own plan comes from your consultation.

  • Walking with a frame or crutches from the first day or two.
  • Walking with a stick or without support after about four to six weeks.
  • Driving once you can bend the knee well and brake hard, often around six weeks (ask at your follow-up).
  • Most daily activities by about three months. Swelling can take up to a year to settle fully.
  • Daily exercises matter more than anything else for how well the knee bends.

Risks to know about

  • Infection, which may need antibiotics or further surgery.
  • Blood clots in the leg or lung; you are given medicine and exercises to lower this risk.
  • Stiffness, ongoing pain or a feeling of instability in some patients.
  • The new joint wearing or loosening over many years, which may need a revision.

When to book a visit

Book a visit if knee pain is limiting your walking or sleep, or if treatment so far has not helped. After a knee replacement, call the clinic the same day for a hot, red or leaking wound, a fever, or a swollen, painful calf.

Questions patients ask

Is knee replacement covered by insurance in Dubai?

Many Dubai health insurance plans cover a knee replacement when it is medically needed, usually with pre-approval. The clinic can tell you what your plan needs before you book the operation.

How long does a knee replacement last?

Large registry studies show that most knee replacements are still working 15 to 20 years later. How long yours lasts depends on your age, weight and activity.

Am I too young or too old for a knee replacement?

There is no fixed age. The decision rests on how much the knee limits your life, what the X-rays show and your general health. Younger patients may be offered other treatments first.

Partial or total knee replacement: which is better?

Neither is better for everyone. A partial replacement suits a knee worn on one side only, with healthy ligaments. A total replacement suits a knee worn throughout. Dr. Subhash explains which fits your knee after examining it and reviewing your X-rays.

Will I be able to kneel and pray after a knee replacement?

Many patients can kneel after recovery, though it may feel strange at first. Deep bending, as in sitting on the floor, varies from person to person. Ask about your own goals at the consultation.
